I’m enjoying the holidays with my wife in West Virginia and today I’m catching up on some reading of FCM.  Python is a popular free and open-source programming language and is a reasonable choice for learning a new language in 2012.

Full Circle Magazine (FCM) is a free magazine dedicated to the Ubuntu family of Linux distributions.  A multi-part Python programming tutorial has been appearing in FCM for months now and the first sixteen parts are available as a special PDF of two dedicated issues.  You can download them here:

http://fullcirclemagazine.org/python-special-edition-1/

http://fullcirclemagazine.org/python-special-edition-2/

So the links above get you the first sixteen parts.  As of this writing, FCM has published 29 parts to the Python programming tutorial and if you want more you can find parts 17 through 29 in the monthly issues, again they are free and I think well-written.

I’m very pleased to see Blender 2.6 Essential Training available at Lynda.com as of yesterday.  I consistently recommend Lynda as an excellent resource for learning a wide variety of applications, operating systems, techniques, and methodologies.  My Digital Media students use Blender to create and publish a short animated movie.

In the graphics and animation software arena, you can find plenty of expensive, proprietary applications, but few are as powerful as Blender, which is a free, powerful open source 3D modeling, graphics and animation product.

On the way to a geek Meetup, Dec 2011.

I just learned about this tonight at an Atlanta WordPress Meetup.  Funny, an update appearing as we were meeting.  The Meetup group and meeting was great!  We had some experts demonstrate how to create WordPress plugins.

The latest and greatest version of the WordPress software — 3.3, named “Sonny” in honor of the great jazz saxophonist Sonny Stitt — is immediately available for download or update inside your WordPress dashboard.

WordPress has had over 65 million downloads since version 3.0 was released, and in this third major iteration we’ve added significant polish around the new user experience, navigation, uploading, and imports. Check out this short video that summarizes the things we think you’ll find are the cat’s pajamas:

Whetther you use Windows, Mac, or Linux, a free and open-source alternative to PhotoShop is GIMP.  I love using GIMP and teaching others the basics of how to use it.  You can find my GIMP page with links to resources and download at http://www.charlesaelliott.com/tutorials/gimp/.

One of the biggest complaints that many people have about open source software is that there isn’t adequate documentation. On the Linux front, though, there is surprisingly rich information available for free online on moving from being a beginner to an advanced user. Whether you’re new to Linux, or a seasoned Linux administrator, you can find hugely helpful resources online, without paying anything. Here is our most recently updated collection of top free resources for Linux.

There are plenty of people I know who’d like to know how to program, yet they’re confused by how to start and what the general ideas of programming are. In addition, there are a large number of programming languages to choose from, so choosing the right one to start out with may be a little difficult for the inexperienced programmer. This article will help you get started with a relatively easy to learn language.
